A Note About The Incision Site

Good Morning Day Three

Good Morning Day Three

I am currently in school studying to work in a medical laboratory. Why the lab; why not, say nursing? There are two main reasons for this. First, I tend to be an introvert, and touching people did not sound like something I wanted to do. Second, I have a very low “ick” meter, and gasping at a sick/injured person while saying ” oh my gosh, that’s nasty!” tends to be frowned upon in the medical field.

Now, knowing my low tolerance for icky, I was terrified to see Henry’s incision site. Here’s the funny thing. It’s nowhere near as bad as I thought. I’m wondering if this is along the same lines as the whole, your own baby’s poop doesn’t smell as bad to you as someone else’s baby’s poop does?

That’s the weird thing. I was prepared for scary & icky, and it wasn’t. Rose colored glasses perhaps? I see the picture I posted the day after surgery and am like, “woe, that looks terrible.” But seeing him in front of me, not so bad.

Like the Michelle said, the first time is the shocking one, but after that it seems to become a topic of conversation!

I can remember when Franklin had his amputation.. his incision was only about 5 inches long.. I remember thinking… Is that all??
I had seen pictures of doggers with incisions way up their shoulder and that is what I was prepared for!
We love pictures… of all things.. it helps others learn and its good to share our stories, etc.
Christine….. with Franklin in her heart♥

I think even in so short of a time it is looking better. I will post a pic of it tomorrow.

    Dawn,
Good for you studying to be a lab tech. I’m a Nuc Med Tech and I wasn’t crazy about the idea of seeing blood and guts but it’s not too bad in my field. But I can deal with the injuries on my horses and dogs. Maggie’s scar was really long but it didn’t bother me and my husband would’ve flat out fainted if he had to deal with it. Hope Henry’s recovery is uneventful.

That is an awesome analogy. I’d say you’re definitely right but in time even squeamish people like me learn how to deal with ick better after going through this process.

Plus, your great attitude also helps to keep the ick factor down!

Yeah Jill’s scar didn’t bother me at all, although I’m the same person that watched a youtube video of a cat leg amputation the night before her surgery so……….
